| GEOGRAPHY " Hong Kong" literally means 'Fragrant Harbour,' which is derived from the area where fragrant trees were once abundant and exported - the present-day Aberdeen and Wong Chuk Hang on Hong Kong Island. Hong Kong consists of: Hong Kong Island - Located in the South China Sea at the mouth of the "Pearl River" (Zhu Jiang). Kowloon Peninsula - Located in the south of Boundary Street and is attached to the New Territories in the north. New Territories - Connected to Mainland China across the Sham Chun River (Shenzhen River). Hong Kong Island is the second largest and also the most populated, while Ap Lei Chau is the most densely populated in the world. Hong Kong has 236 islands in the South China Sea, Lantau Island is the largest among all. Lying in between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Peninsula is Victoria Harbour, one of the world's deepest maritime ports. The landscape of Hong Kong is fairly hilly to mountainous with steep slopes. The highest point in the territory is Tai Mo Shan, at a height of 958 metres, while lowlands can be found in the northwestern part in New Territories. |
